True Survival Kits Can Really Save Your Life: Since I started teaching international wilderness survival back in 1991, I’ve seen people trying to sell or teach how to make FAKE survival kits.

I don’t care what anybody tells you – True Survival Kits must satisfy the 8 Elements of Survival which are:

  • Fire
  • Water
  • Shelter
  • First-Aid
  • Signal
  • Food
  • Weapons
  • Navigation

You have to put items in the Survival Kit that directly or indirectly satisfy the 8 Elements of Survival.

Here are 03 important questions:

  • “Why do I need a Survival Kit(s)?”
  • “How big should I make my Survival Kits?”
  • “Can I make my own Survival Kits without paying for them?”

“Why do I need a Survival Kit(s)?”

A Survival Kit is your ‘2ND CHANCE.’ When you venture outdoors, you’re up against Mother Nature and all She possesses. And She shows no mercy to anyone. But She’ll really come down hard on the ignorant and the disrespectful. A Survival Kit helps you survive your survival situation. You get a ‘2ND CHANCE.’

Whether you find yourself lost or going hypothermic – GO STATIC (make camp), break-out your Survival Kit and build a good fire. The Search And Rescue (SAR) Teams will start looking for you at your LKP (Last Known Point). So go static, break-out your Survival Kit and make camp.

“How big should I make my Survival Kits?”

Your Survival Kits should be made in 04 sizes:

  • Pocket Survival Kit
  • Backpack Survival Kit
  • Vehicle Survival Kit
  • Home Survival Kit

Pocket Survival Kit: The Pocket Survival Kit is designed to fit in your pants pocket. If you’re separated from home, vehicle and lose your backpack, you still have your Pocket Survival Kit. You still have your 2nd Chance.

Backpack Survival Kit: The Backpack Survival Kit is bigger and more elaborate than your Pocket Survival Kit. It’s ready-to-go waiting for you in your backpack.

“No matter how short your outdoor adventure – even for a few hours, still carry a backpack with extra clothing & gear and your Backpack Survival Kit.”

Many many folks have ventured outdoors with just the shirt on their back planning on returning in just a few hours and ended up not coming back. Some survived and some died where they lay.

This Backpack Survival Kit is a plastic mayonnaise jar wrapped in Gorilla tape for durability and water-proofing. I added some Press N’ Seal to the lid to insure no water leaks into the container.

To prove its durability and water-proof, here it is floating in my small 1,000-gallon watergarden.

The Backpack Survival Kit satisfies the 8 Elements of Survival:

  • Fire
  • Water
  • Shelter
  • First-Aid
  • Signal
  • Food
  • Weapons
  • Navigation

It also includes survival items like:

  • A chemical for venomous snakebites and emergency fire-starting (first-aid, fire,…)
  • Fishing bait I call the Panamanian Fishing Trick that repeatedly caught 100+ bass fish in just a few hours (food)
  • Food for 02-weeks (food is a great morale builder, plus it fights despair)

Vehicle Survival Kit: The Vehicle Survival Kit (for people) is much bigger than your Backpack Survival Kit.  The Vehicle Survival Kit includes cars, trucks, snowmobiles, motorcycles, boats, planes,…  It should have enough supplies to keep you comfortable for at least a week. And again, it must satisfy the 8 Elements of Survival:

  • Fire
  • Water
  • Shelter
  • First-Aid
  • Signal
  • Food
  • Weapons
  • Navigation

Water Container: On the left is a 06-gallon water container that is blue in color to prevent direct sunlight from in-contact with the water. Direct sunlight causes algae to grow. And according to the Alaskan State Park, “one of the best ways to purify water is to add one drop of household bleach (Clorox, Purex,..) to each quart of water.”

So that’s 04-drops of bleach per gallon of water. You should rotate the water every year (dump & replenish and add 04 drops of bleach per gallon of water).

Survival Kit: The Survival Kit on the right includes other ways to procure water and purify water. It also contains at 12 cans of food, 02 military MREs, and multiple ways to satisfy the other Elements of Survival (fire, shelter, first-aid, signal, weapons and navigation).

Blankets: You’ll notice I have white blankets (signaling [beacon], shelter [keeping warm],… at the floor of my vehicle.

Home Survival Kit: The Home Survival Kit is a Survival Kit of supplies that should last you at least a month.

In my case, I have enough supplies to last me at least a couple months easy.

“Can I make my own Survival Kits without paying for them?”

You sure can. Why pay for FAKE Survival Kits when you can make your own. Just insure when you make your 4 types of Survival Kits that you remember the 8 Elements of Survival.

A True Survival Kit must satisfy the 8 Elements of Survival:

  • Fire
  • Water
  • Shelter
  • First-Aid
  • Signal
  • Food
  • Weapons
  • Navigation

Here, let me give you some examples. Let’s start with FIRE. Of all the 8 Elements of Survival, pound for pound, FIRE may be the most important. If you do everything wrong, but you get a fire going, you’re doing good. FIRE directly and indirectly satisfies all the other 8 Elements of Survival. PLUS, it gives you a great sense of security – being safe.

FIRE: Electric lighter, flint lighter, strike anywhere matches, pack of tinder (cotton), pine kindling strips, sterno (see #003 AASN – ‘Sauna In a Can’ For Emergency Warming Heat), flares,… See “Save My Life,… – Survival Program” at https://www.survivalexpertblog.com/survival-program And see #075 AASN: Emergency Fires Using Drink Flavoring Products.

WATER: Balloons, prophylactics (best), survival straw, 05-gallon water container in your vehicle, (05-gallon water container – water cache???),…

SHELTER: Plastic tarp, tent, extra clothing,… (clothing is part of shelter), sterno (see #003 AASN – ‘Sauna In a Can’ For Emergency Warming Heat),…

FIRST-AID: Clove Oil (see #025 AASN – Pounding Toothache Pain Home Remedies), NATR Salve (see #013 AASN – Best Salve I Ever Used And Still Do), Colgate Toothpaste (see #002 AASN – Laydon’s Burn And POUNDING Pain Remedy), band-aids,…

SIGNAL: Flashlight, whistle, mirror, mylar reflective sections, fire (night time), fire – smoke (daytime), Walkie-Talkies, Satellite Phone,…

FOOD: MREs, beef jerky, tootsie rolls (see #071 AASN – Tootsie Roll Candies Saved Their Lives And You Too) peanut butter (see #009 AASN – Peanut Butter For Food, Deer Bait And Emergency Fires), candy, trail-mix (see #036 AASN – I Collapsed – 2nd Wind Trail-Mix Rejuvenation),…

WEAPONS: Rifle, knife (pocket & Bowie-type), pistol, Industrial Mace,…

NAVIGATION: Compass & map, GPS device, satellite photos,… (see #049 AASN – Crescent Moon Emergency Night Navigation)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your Survival Kits should be orientated towards the time of year (temperatures) and area. For example, if you’re going in a desert environment in the hot summer months, lean towards Water for constant hydration and Shelter (clothing & overhead shelter) to protect you from the elements.
