The following information is based on my own recollections when I was in the service.
The US Army has 02 SERE (Survival Escape Resistance Evasion) Schools:
- SERE Level C is orientated toward surviving as a POW (Prisoner Of War) in a POW environment. SERE Level C is 04-weeks in duration.
- SERE Level B is orientated toward a soldier evading to friendly and AVOIDING capture. SERE Level B is 04-weeks in duration.

I’ve interviewed and talked to several of my friends who attended the SERE Level C Course and I gotta tell you, that Abu Ghraib fiasco is college prank stuff compared to what SERE Level C candidates experience.
I also interviewed a retired Special Forces Sergeant Major who I worked with when in the 5th Special Forces Group. He works at the SERE complex and is one of the ‘bearded ones.’ Those are the bad guys trained to physically beat-up the SERE Candidates under certain conditions. Like I said the Abu Ghraib crap in Iraq was a joke.
I won’t get into specifics concerning the SERE Level C Course but I gotta tell you, the US tax payers are getting their money’s worth.
Now the SERE Level B Course does NOT focus on already being captured and how to survive being a POW. The SERE Level B Course is focused on evasion and wilderness survival while on-the-run / evading.
I attended the SERE Level B Course while stationed down in Panama. I actually got suckered in attending the Course. The SERE Cadre from Camp Mackall deployed down to Panama and instructed a great Course. The Class started with 52 – 55 candidates and only 24 graduated.
This Blog Post is focused on real survival and evasion by US Army Special Forces soldiers in combat and in a training environment.
As the saying goes – which is true: “What You Do In Training You Do In Combat!”
Let’s start the first Blog Post with 1st Lt. Nick Rowe 05 Years To Freedom!
