Since it’s cold outside, here’s an EMERGENCY BLOG POST post for you.

On 061030C January 2020 (Wednesday), the outside temperature is approximately 42-degrees Fahrenheit.  I was just starting to clean my water garden of debris using my home-made 08-foot staff & net.

I stepped down off the deck and the next think I know, I’m underwater.  I tripped over the board on the edge of the deck.  I went head first in the frigid cold water.  I got real lucky, I barely missed hitting my forehead / face, full force on one of the cat walk’s (large heavy-duty plank board – 15-foot, ½-foot, 02-inches) I have over my 1,000-gallon water garden.  I would have probably been knocked-out cold, submerged underwater and that’s it.  I’m toast.

Underwater, I remember looking at one of my home-made filters tipped over spilling its collected debris.  I surfaced and dragged myself out of the frigid water garden and did the smartest thing MANY outdoor folks don’t do when they find themselves accidently soaking wet in a frigid wilderness environment.

Right then and there on my deck I stripped-off all my wet clothes except for my socks.  Believe it or not I immediately felt warmer strip naked versus wearing those dripping wet cold clothes.

I went inside my house, dried off and put on some fresh clothes.  I made a super hot cup of coffee /chocolate to get my internal body temperature back to 98.6 F.

A few IMPORTANT THINGS I gotta tell you about this experience:

Invigorating:  Because of my many many miserable training experiences in the military associated with cold weather, submerged in cold water, patrolling while soaking wet,… I HATE COLD WATER.  I HATE BEING COLD & WET.  Anyway, after being submerged in that quick dip in that cold water, it’s been more than several hours after that dunk, and I still feel INVIGORATED.  See Lake Baikal Fountain Of Youth!

Outdoor Environment:  What if this happened to me or YOU when outdoors in a wilderness environment?  It’s 42-degrees, your soaking dripping wet what are you going to do?  You do nothing, KILLER HYPOTHERMIA is already a serious threat to your life.  What if that temperature starts dropping?

Bottom Line, carry some spare clothes in water-proof packing.

Dry Drowning:  Like I said, I suddenly went headfirst in my water garden.  What if you went headfirst in an almost freezing pond, lake, river,…?  Please read about Dry Drowning.

Cell Phone:  I had my cell phone in my pocket and of course it got wet.  And now it’s DEAD DEAD.  It won’t work.  If I was in a wilderness environment and alone, I’d have no communications to emergency services, and that’s IF there were cell towers available to get a signal.  So consider weather-proofing your communication devices (walkie-talkies, cell phones, satellite phones,…) when venturing in wilderness environments.

Intuition:  Since I moved on my property, I’ve been wanting to secure a knotted rope hanging from the trellis at the edge of the water garden so to take a hand-hold to prevent exactly what happened earlier (keep reading).  I kept putting it off.

Back in early 2008 (Winter), I stepped-off in the exact same spot on my deck.  I stepped on the edge of the water garden and it was super icy slick.  In a split second, both my feet (boots) went out from underneath me and my body went straight down in a flash.

Because of my self-defense training, I instinctively broke my fall with my left arm and hand slapping hard against the edge of the cement water garden, and a split second later, I went splashing in my water garden.  If I hadn’t of done that, if I hadn’t of broke my fall, the back of my head would have hit full force against the thick cement of the water garden.  No doubt I’d of been knocked out cold and submerged underwater and that’s the end of me.

So tomorrow, FINALLY FINALLY, I’m going downtown to buy a thick rope, tie some overhand knots in it and secure it to the trellis near the edge of my water garden.

Emergency Fire-Starting:  What if:

  • You’re alone in the wilderness and it’s 42-degrees Fahrenheit
  • You’re soaking wet with 02-feet of snow on the ground
  • Your cell phone is DEAD DEAD from being submerged underwater
  • You’re not carrying any extra clothing
  • You’re matches are soaking wet
  • You’re starting to go hypothermic and it’s almost sundown

To HELL with ‘rubbing 02 sticks together.’  Do you know how to start an emergency life-saving fire using:

  • Water
  • Your Urination
  • Your Spit (saliva)
  • Drop of water
  • Snowball
