Here’s a very recent survival story that you can learn from so it doesn’t happen to you.

On 08 May 2019 (Wednesday), 35-year old Ms. Amanda E. went on a lone hike (established trail – Kahakapao Loop Trail) in the Makawao Forest Reserve (northern side of Maui, Hawaii).  She left her car, credentials and car key behind before going on her hike. Amanda didn’t return from her hike and authorities were immediately alerted.

The Makawao Forest Reserve is noted to be very dense in vegetation, complimented with creeks, ravines and rugged terrain. It’s unknown if she’s lost still wandering the Makawao Forest Reserve wilderness, she’s hurt or met with foul play.

Hundreds of searchers to include law enforcement, volunteers, helicopters, tracking dogs, drones, hunters, climbers,… took part in the search for Amanda.

A $10,000.00 REWARD is offered for information for Amanda’s safe return.  As of this writing (14 May 2019 – Tuesday), Amanda has not been found.  As time goes on and no signs of Amanda, foul play is suspected.

“If Amanda Was One Of My Subscribers, This Tragedy Would Have Been AVOIDED From The Very Beginning!”

I can confidently say this with 200% certainty.

Let me give you some tips to prevent this tragedy:

  • Never go into the wilderness alone (male companion)
  • ALWAYS carry a primary and secondary weapon (in Amanda’s case as a hiker – mace & pistol for man & beast)
  • Use a GPS tracking device, even when using established trails
  • Avoid a fixed schedule (human predators)
  • Even though it was an anticipated short hike, still carry a backpack that has items in it to satisfy the
8 Elements of Survival (Fire, Water, Shelter, First-Aid, Signal, Food, Weapons and Navigation).  Shelter not only includes overhead shelter items but also includes protective clothing (head to toe)

UPDATE    UPDATE   UPDATE   UPDATE   UPDATE!!!!!

Very good news. Late Friday (24 May 2019), it was reported that Ms. Amanda E. was spotted by searchers in a helicopter. She was eventually retrieved and taken to the hospital.

Here’s a quote from the news report: Cantellops is a former Army Ranger who operates “Masters of Adventure,” which leads diving, spearfishing and other outings in the Maui area. He said he, Berquist and Helmer were surveying terrain for possible locations to enter the woods on foot when they saw her.

The news headline read: ‘I chose life’: Hiker Amanda E. survived on wild fruit, water and grit for 17 days in the Hawaiian forest.

I just have to add or re-iterate one important factor when you know your lost in the wilderness – STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP where you are and make camp. Why?

The SAR Teams will start the search from your LKP (Last Known Point) and go from there. If you wander the wilderness, you’re just making the search area much larger and making it more difficult for the SAR Teams to find you. In this case Amanda, was lost in the Hawaiian wilderness for 17 days.

I applaud Amanda for not giving-up and dying in-place.  For that duration of surviving in the wilderness alone for 17-days, most others (not trained in wilderness survival) in the same survival scenario would have given-up and died in-place at least several days earlier.
