Hey, I live out in the country.  And from late March to early October each year, I have to deal with ticks crawling up my clothing and then they attach themselves all over my body and some can give me Lyme Disease.

Before you read this blog post, how about reading this blog post first:

06 Insects You Better Kill All The Time Or Else!

OK, you back.  Let’s get started.

I also have to deal with nagging, biting mosquitoes too.  Here are a few techniques I use to repel & kill ticks and mosquitoes:

  • Mosquito Headnet
  • Cedarcide
  • Scotch Whiskey
  • Vick’s VapoRub

Mosquito Headnet

I purchased a mosquito headnet at Walmart.  There are 02 headnets per pack.  They work great.  You just place them over your head and face.  There’s an elastic band that wraps around your neck that keep the mosquitoes from squeezing through the neck area.  I sometimes use the headnet when I’m cleaning the 03 submerged water filters in my watergarden.  To compliment the headnet, I use Cedarcide.

Cedarcide Kills & Repels Mosquitoes, Ticks, Fleas, Chiggers,…

Cedarcide used to be called Best Yet.  I’ve been using this product for several years because it WORKS.  Plus, it’s DEET free.  I usually buy the gallon-size container.  It lasts me several months.  Cedarcide is cedar oil and other ingredients.  The label states: “Kills and Helps Repel Fleas, Ticks, Mosquitoes, Mites, and Ants.”

I spray all my clothing and headgear with Cedarcide.  I spray my socks real good and then blouse my pants inside my socks.  I also spray Cedarcide on my hands and rub it on my neck and face.  This protects me all day long.  See Mosquito Headnet.

Scotch Whiskey Repels Mosquitoes

I have a bottle of Chivas Regal Premium Scotch Whisky.  With it is a small spray bottle loaded with the Scotch Whisky.  The nozzle on this small bottle sprays a super fine mist.  I experimented one day and sprayed all my clothing & headgear and applied it to my hands, face, neck.  It WORKED!

There were some nagging mosquitoes but NOT THE CONSTANT HOVERING of mosquitoes around me.  I got the idea from an interview I did back in 2004 I believe.  The interview is titled:  “Trujillo Anti-Malaria Concoction!”  And you get the entire true story in my Survival Book below.

Vicks VapoRub Repels Ticks

Have you ever put Vicks Vapo Rub or any of those other mentholated products up to your nose?  Clears up your nasal passages doesn’t it?  Just think of what happens to a tick when they come in contact with it.

This is what I do to repel ticks when I’m mowing grass or working outdoors during tick season (late March to early October).

  • I get my bottle of Vicks Vapo Rub or Equate Medicated Chest Rub (there are several others you can use), and I smear the ointment on my socks (ankle upwards).
  • I then tuck my pants into my socks.  Ticks are in the grass.

So when I’m cutting the grass, a few ticks will end up on my shoes and start climbing upward.  I’ve found, I’ve had a lot less ticks on me by applying the mentholated product to my socks.  Plus, I blouse my pants into my socks in case any ticks climb past the treated socks.

Vicks VapoRub Improvement

I now have dedicated socks that are treated with a mentholated product.  I put these socks over a regular pair of socks.  When I’m done, I take-off the ‘mentholated socks’ and secure them in a safe place for next time.  I am also treating a shirt, pants and headgear with a mentholated product.  This way I have a complete outdoor’s ‘mentholated outfit.’  I’ll re-apply more mentholated product as needed.  But Bottom Line, I have a dedicated ‘Mentholated Outfit’ to repel ticks.
