In my previous blog posts, I talked about active shooters and how to counter an active shooter in close quarter battle (CQB) without using any conventional weapons because in most cases (99%), coward Active Shooters go after a crowd of defenseless unarmed victims. You don’t see coward Active Shooters targeting police departments where all the police officers are armed. OK then.

On Friday – 31 May 2019, another coward Active Shooter targeted defenseless unarmed victims and here’s the tragic story.

On 31 May 2019, 40-year old DeWayne Craddock, was located at the Virginia Beach Municipal buildings in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He had been employed approximately 15-years with the Virginia Beach Municipal facility and had resigned from his job just hours before his assault.

At approximately 1610 hours (4:10pm), Craddock was outside in the parking lot and shot & killed one male employee in his car and then entered the public utilities offices on the 2nd floor.

The facilities were secure and Craddock being an employee still had access to the facilities using his issued security pass credentials, even though he resigned hours before. He entered the secure facilities of the Virginia Beach Municipal buildings carrying weapons and ammunition.

With no warning and by complete surprise, Craddock engaged fellow employees on the 2nd floor. Some of the employees he had worked with for years. One employee he killed had 41-years working for the Virginia Beach Municipal facilities.

It is reported that Craddock used 02 .45 caliber pistols and a rifle to engage his defenseless & unarmed victims. One of his pistols had a silencer attached to the muzzle. He was equipped with multiple extended .45 caliber magazines, meaning they could hold more .45 caliber bullets than the standard 07-round magazines. The .45 caliber bullets are large in diameter (almost ½-inch wide) as compared to most other pistol ammunition. The .45 caliber bullet is a slower bullet but because of it’s wide width, it has some knock down power behind it, even if the victim is wearing a bullet-proof vest, the violent impact of the bullet will slam you to the ground. This may be the reason why Craddock chose these pistols. Police always wear bullet-proof vests. And Craddock probably anticipated police involvement real soon after he started his murderous assault.

It is reported by a Virginia Beach government source that Craddock was a ‘disgruntled employee.’

During the Virginia Beach attack, it is unknown if the facility employees had a ‘Active Shooter’ Plan like some facilities like Walmart. WalMart has an ‘Active Shooter’ Plan. It’s basically everyone for themselves – run and hide plan.

It was reported that employees evaded to safety and others hid themselves. Some barricaded themselves in rooms by blocking the doors using office furniture. I read no reports of anyone putting up any resistance as far as fighting back with ‘at-the-ready weapons’ (furniture, hand-held objects, fire extinguishers, cleaning chemicals, hot coffee, sharp objects, personal objects,…). There were vocal calls spread through the building of ‘Active Shooter’ which no doubt saved some lives.

Yeah, I know, it’s easy for me to say this. I wasn’t there. Me, I’d rather put up a fight than be slaughtered in-place by a piece of shi!+ coward that targets innocent defenseless & unarmed co-workers.

For example, if one person put up just a few seconds of fighting resistance by something as simple as throwing a 05-pound paperweight from the top of a desk at his face, putting Craddock temporarily for a few seconds on the defense – temporarily halting his attack. Think of what several people combined could do to resist Craddock. That simple resistance of throwing a paperweight at the attacker’s face, delayed his slaughter by 10-seconds or so which bought more time for the evaders & hiders and gave the police just several more seconds to close-in and engage the piece of sh!+ earlier, thus saving more lives. But think of what would have happened if that 05-pound flying paperweight connected to Craddock’s face? It could have knocked him out cold or temporarily incapacitated him. The co-worker could then follow-up by taking his weapon(s) and secured him till police arrived. Here’s another example of fightback using no guns.

When the attacker enters any office, he has to go through what’s called in military terms, a ‘Fatal Funnel.’ A Fatal Funnel is a doorway, a hallway, a window,… It’s a place where the attacker is channelized and must go through to get to YOU and your fellow co-workers.

All offices have a hot pot of coffee or 02 going and they all have fire extinguishers. Turn off all the lights in the office. Lay in wait and allow the attacker to come through the doorway – the Fatal Funnel, and you and your co-workers let him have it with 03 or 04 cups of boiling hot coffee in the face and / or hands (so he lets go of his weapons), followed by cruise missile like fire extinguisher or 02 to the head to knock him out cold – turn him OFF. Secure all his weapons and tie him up.

1st Note: I just gave you a couple of examples of some simple fighting resistance. Just a couple of examples.

2nd Note: Before we carry-on, let me give you one of the BEST QUOTES I EVER HEARD and it comes from an RI (Ranger Instructor) from the US Army Ranger School. This comes from my book:

are you scared of the dark

Paperback Book—————Kindle E-Book

OK, here’s a quote from my book above:

Do Something, Anything: We were patrolling (mountains near Dahlonega, Georgia) and made contact with the enemy (aggressors). It always seemed every contact was always going uphill. Contact was made and the Patrol Leader (Ranger student) did nothing. He was in shock. He just stood there. An RI (Ranger Instructor) evaluating the Patrol Leader was pissed. I’ll never forget what he said: “God damn it Ranger, do something, anything. The worst thing you could do is to do fu#&n’ nothing. Doing anything even if it’s fu#&n’ wrong is better than doing nothing at all.” And of course, that Ranger student failed that patrol right then and there. I have no recollection if he failed or passed Ranger School.

Do you see where I’m going with this? Again, “…do something, anything. The worst thing you could do is to do fu#&n’ nothing. Doing anything even if it’s fu#&n’ wrong is better than doing nothing at all.”

Now let’s carry-on.

Reports detailed accounts of 01 brave soul executing in military terms what is called a DLIC which stands for Detachment Left In Contact. A DLIC is executed when the main body of a friendly force knows they are going to be overrun and eventually decimated by a superior enemy force. So a smaller detachment is left behind as a blocking force which buys time for the main body to conduct a retrograde – a retreat to a better defendable ground or retreat all the way back to link-up with friendly troops.

In this case, a brave soul by the name of Ryan Keith Cox conducted a DLIC. He stayed behind as a blocking force to buy time for his co-workers to get to better defendable ground. He bought them time while the police were enroute to the scene. He saved several of his co-workers lives but lost his life with his brave actions, already knowing the serious threat that was closing-in on him. In my humble opinion, in military terms, Mr. Cox’s brave actions are equal to the actions of brave military personnel who have won the Unites States Congressional Medal of Honor – the highest military award under combat conditions. I greatly applaud the brave & courageous actions of Mr. Ryan Keith Cox. He will be remembered decades from now and into the next century. I’m sure in the near future, a building or a school will be named after him.

Reports indicated 04 police officers closed-in on Craddock and were in a prolonged firefight with Craddock and one of the police officers was injured. That engagement right then & there with the 04 police STOPPED Craddock’s offensive actions of slaughtering innocent co-workers.

Now Craddock was on the defense. Reports indicated a prolonged firefight with those 04 brave police officers. That meant Craddock had a lot more ammunition. What if those 04 police officers were still enroute to the scene? Many more co-workers, not putting up resistance would have been slaughtered in-place.

Note:  Craddock was killed in the firefight with police.

You Don’t Need Guns To Stop The Slaughter Of An Active Shooter!

But you don’t need guns to slow down or stop the slaughter of an active shooter. You have to do what has been taught to US Army infantry military personnel since probably back as far as World War II (WWII).

It’s the only thing you can do when in Close Quarter Battle and the attacker that has the element of SURPRISE on their side. Craddock obviously had the element of SURPRISE on his side otherwise the police would have already been called to the scene ahead of time.

Again, when surprised by an attacker in Close Quarter Battle, there’s only one defense – as in military terms – you’re caught in a Near Ambush. NOBODY but NOBODY survives a well executed Near Ambush unless you counter it with a tactic taught & used by infantry soldiers since WWII.

I want you to go back and read the following blog post in-order the following order and you decide if this tactic would work when an ‘Active Shooter’ surprises you and several of your co-workers.
