I’d (Joseph A. Laydon Jr.) like to comment on TA Outdoors – 10 Wilderness Survival Tips in 10 Minutes survival video.  Let me add more survival information to compliment this video.

Cattails:  Yes, cattails can be used for emergency fire-starting.  I’ve fired-up plenty of cattail fluff combined with dry grass (keep it fired-up) using only sparks to get my other tinder and kindling fired-up with sustaining fuel standing-by.  And as far as food, according to botanist, Leland Marsh estimated that if cattail were commercially grown, an acre’s worth of the cattail rhizome (root) alone equaled 10-times the yield of an acre of potatoes!  Now that’s a lot of chow!  And turn an acre of rhizomes (roots) into flour, Marsh estimated the yield would be 02 tons of flour!  Far greater than an acre of the popular wheat, rye,…

Chewing Gum:  I’m not sure if gum can be used to plug small holes in tarps and tents when in a cold weather environment.  However, chewing gum and bubblegum are life-savers when it comes to emergency fire-starting.  I discovered a super simple technique using chewing gums and bubblegums for emergency fire-starting.

Emergency Fire-Starting: I’ve used the military elbow flashlight since the 1970s. In the spare bulb compartment are 02 small cavities to stuff some #0000 Steel Wool. Great ‘Electric Tinder.’ Just attach some ‘electric tinder’ to the positive & negative terminals, turn-on the flashlight and BAMMM, add the burning ‘electric tinder’ to your bird’s nest of tinder in your firepit. You can add ‘electric tinder’ to all your flashlights. Just put some in a small plastic bag and stuff it in a crevice in your flashlight. This is Boy Scout level emergency fire-starting. I have advanced and ultra-advanced emergency fire-starting cause there are times when matches and lighters won’t work. And FORGET all the prehistoric ‘rubbing 02 sticks together’ applications. They AIN’T GONNA WORK when you’re truly hypothermic.

Moss:  You talked about moss being used to procure water.  Moss like Reindeer Moss (Cladonia rangiferina) and Iceland Moss (Cetraris Icelandica) have long been used as a food source for Native American Indians and animals.  These emergency edible foods are laden with starch and after cooking in boiling water for 02 to 03-hours, provide a gelatinous mass is cooked-up and ready-to-eat.

Pine Needles:  Unless you’re a POW (Prisoner Of War), one of them Bigfoot critters or somebody that wants to live in the wilderness 24/7, the medicinal & nutritional benefits of pine needles isn’t a priority.  Like you said, pine sap, pine resin and pine bark are great for emergency fire-starting.  Pack some in a plastic bag for future outdoor ventures.

Water:  You can go 03-days without water before serious physical and mental problems surface.  Believe me.  From being severely dehydrated in desert and jungle environments – you turn into a ‘Non-Compis Mentis’ (CRAZY PERSON).

And to test yourself or anyone with you – give them the ‘One Second Test.’  If you or anyone with you fail the ‘One Second Test,’ seriously consider ABORTING your outdoor adventure or get on your satellite phone and call for emergency services.  SEE ‘One Second Test For All Outdoor Folks!’ at my website below.

Carry a few prophylactics with you.  They weigh nothing and each will hold about 03-pints of water.  And Survival Straws are a good idea too.  They weigh next to nothing and are designed to FILTER and PURIFY the water as you suck it up through the straw.  Walmart carry’s Survival Straws.

PS  When venturing outdoors, NEVER venture alone.  Tell somebody your exact route and return time.  And each person should carry their own backpack with contents that satisfy the 8 Elements of Survival:

  • Fire
  • Water
  • Shelter
  • First-Aid
  • Signal
  • Food
  • Weapons
  • Navigation

And make your own Survival Kits:

  • Pocket (small & water-proof)
  • Backpack (use a mayonnaise jar and wrap it with bright neon carpet tape – water-proofing & beacon)
  • Vehicle (larger and designed for 07 people for 07-days)

No need to purchase survival kits.  Make your own and save your money.  Make your own Survival Kits according to the season (cold or hot).
