I’m trying to save you some money in case this happens to any of the many plumbing pipes in your home.
I few years ago, I came home and heard a sound coming from my utility room. The sound was coming from behind a section of thin plywood board. Listening closer I heard a trickling of water too.
I got the few tools I owned and removed the section of plywood board. Water sprayed non-stop from a copper pipe. It was a very small hole but the water pressure in the copper pipe had the water spraying a few feet out all over the floor in the utility room.
I knew what I needed to repair the leak. I replaced the thin section of plywood board so the water leaked down into the crawl space where I had a sump pump. I headed off to WalMart and Buccheits in Sparta, IL. to get my repair parts.
All I needed to repair the leak was:
- Small hose clamp
- Bicycle inner tube
- Scissors
- Screw driver
I bought the inner tube at WalMart and the small hose clamp at Buccheits. Both costs just a few bucks versus paying $60 for a plumber to repair the pipe leak.
–
Step 01: I unscrewed the small pipe clamp so I could wrap the clamp around the pipe and rubber section that’s wrapped around the copper pipe.
–
Step 02: I cut a small section of the rubber innertube and measured it so it wraps completely around the copper pipe.
–
Step 03: I re-cut and re-measured it till the rubber innertube fit perfectly around the leaking copper pipe.
–
Step 04: I placed the small section of innertube around the leak and fit the hose clamp around the copper pipe and section of rubber innertube.
–
Step 05: I took the screwdriver and started tightening-up the hose clamp. As I tightened the hose clamp, the leak slowed up and stopped completely.
–
That copper pipe repair was back in 2014, about 05-years ago and it’s still holding.
I only used a small section of the innertube and saved the rest for possible future use.
The pipe leak repair is simple to do, has lasted years and it’s super cheap compared paying a plumber. Got nothing against plumbers, they have to put food on the table too, but why pay out $60 bucks when you can do it yourself for just a few bucks.
