How To Make Your Own True Survival Kits!

I don’t care what anybody tells you, I’m going to teach you ‘how to make your own true survival kits.’  TRUE Survival Kits MUST BE constructed to SATISFY the 8 Elements Of Survival.  THE ELEMENTS OF SURVIVAL ARE:

Survival Expert Blog Home Page

  • FIRE
  • WATER
  • SHELTER
  • FIRST AID
  • SIGNAL
  • FOOD
  • WEAPONS
  • NAVIGATION.

Military type survival kits don’t include WEAPONS and NAVIGATION because all combat arm’s type jobs require soldiers to carry their compass and their assigned weapon.  Most civilian survival kits don’t include WEAPONS and NAVIGATION!  So they’re not true survival kits!

You need weapons to help AVOID FEAR AND PANIC (biggest enemies of SURVIVAL)!!!  Navigation is a must because I believe navigation in your own survival area is very important and life-saving!  Why get even more lost in an isolated area!

Many people purchase so-called survival kits.  If your survival kit doesn’t satisfy (already has or a way to procure or get) FIRE, WATER, SHELTER, FIRST AID, SIGNAL, FOOD, WEAPONS and NAVIGATION then take it back and get a refund cause it’s not a true survival kit!

Survival kits can be as small and lightweight as a plastic film canister, or as elaborate and as large as some military and civilian survival kits.  A survival kit could fill a room!

Your own personal survival kits should be put together according to:

  • Environment you’ll be in (desert, arctic, jungle, mountainous…).
  • Time of year (Summer, Winter, Fall, Spring).
  • Number of people.
  • Special consideration (medicine, allergies…).
  • Level of experience in that environment.
  • Time spent in that environment (01-day, 02 months…).
  • Terrain.
  • Access to water / Available water.

However, there is nothing wrong with having a “generic” survival kit that suffices all eight elements of survival to include weapons and navigation!  You could have a little one to carry with you in your pocket, a bigger one one your backpack, a much more elaborate one in your vehicle, boat, plane,… and a BIG one at your home.

A survival kit the size of a film canister container in your pocket or glove box is better than nothing.  Survival kits can be very elaborate and sizeable!  A small-size survival kit could be carried on your body, whereas the more elaborate one could be secured in your backpack, a bigger one in your vehicle, boat, plane…!  Again, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you always always carry multiple survival kits.  And make a survival kit for your vehicle, your boat, your plane… (spare parts, oil, gas, tools…).

Survival Kits should always be carried on your person (small one in your pocket), a bigger one in your backpack and a bigger one in your or vehicle.  And a BIG one in your home.   No matter how the survival kit is constructed it must, it must, it must, one more time – it must satisfy the 8 Elements of Survival (Fire, Water, Shelter, First-Aid, Signal, Food, Weapons and Navigation)!

I’ve stated that you can have a pocket Survival Kit using a film canister.  However, film canisters are getting hard to find.  Photography is going digital.  No film needed.  Anyway, years ago I designed a my new “100+ Uses Pocket Survival Kit!”  And here’s a picture of it.

This “100+ Uses Pocket Survival Kit!”:

  1. Double Water-Proofed
  2. Fits in your pocket (dime on top to show size)
  3. Label has instructions to open it
  4. List and employment of all items inside Survival Kit
  5. All items packed inside Survival Kit
  6. Extremely durable
  7. Floats
  8. Bright Color

My point is, you don’t need to buy a Survival Kit from anybody.  I’m trying to teach you ‘how to make your own true survival kits.’  Make your own true survival kits  Make one to put in your pants pocket.  Why?  What if you lose your backpack?  You still have a TRUE Survival Kit in your pocket.  Have a more elaborate (bigger) Survival Kit in your backpack.  And A BIGGER one in your vehicle.

Let’s talk about each of the elements of survival.

01)  FIRE:  Fire no doubt will give you that sense of security and well-being in a survival environment.  Fire can be used to:

  • cook your prey (that you’ve caught in one the traps and snares you’ll soon learn about).
  • keep you warm.
  • keep wild animals away.
  • signal a rescue party (smoke during the day – fire at night).
  • purify your water.
  • dry your clothes.
  • smoke meat.
  • prepare parts for all your traps and snares.
  • much more…
  • FIRE helps you AVOID the Two Biggest Enemies of Survival which are FEAR & PANIC.

I’m trying to teach you ‘how to make your own true survival kits’ and in my humble opinion, pound for pound, FIRE is the most important cause it satisfies ALL the 8 Elements of Survival.  In a previous blog post, you learned several basic & advanced field-expedient ways to get a fire going in only a few seconds to help you IMPROVISE, OVERCOME and ADAPT to your situation!

At the same time, I’ll list a few items that should be in your SURVIVAL KIT to start legal and deliberate life-saving fires!  Keep reading.

02)  WATER:  Water is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL in a survival situation.  In blog post – “06 Survival Tricks To Gather & Purify Water”, you’ve already read and learned different techniques to procure water.  Gathering water, filtering it and purifying it should be a continuous process.  You could never get enough water.

Water next to immediate first aid (in a life threatening situation) should be at the top of your list.  You can go about three weeks without food but only three days without water.

Remember lack of water DULLS THE MIND!  You’re going to be “CLUELESS”, if you’re not continuously hydrated.

Drink, drink, drink and drink water.  When in doubt DRINK!!  Once you’re dehydrated, you’ll have trouble remembering how to do very simple math problems (35 divided by 07 equals daaaahh!!).  Your short-term memory will become even shorter!  Remember this:  When in doubt DRINK WATER – even if you’re not thirsty, drink water!!!

Below are some good reasons to keep gathering water, filtering it and purifying it on a continuous basis!  Also, later in this section I’ve listed a few items you might consider for your survival kit to procure water

a) hydration (minimum 04 to 05 quarts a day, depending on your activity, temperature and injuries).

b) hygiene (complete or partial).

c) cleaning and preparing small game.

d) cleaning clothes.

e) preparing herbal teas.

f) cooking vegetation.

g) cooking insects.

h) sterilizing bandages.

i) much more….

Note:  Vehicles should carry at least 05-gallons per person.  Most of the water (98%) is used for hydration.

03)  SHELTER:  There’s nothing like “Home Sweet Home!”  A shelter will definitely give you that added feeling of security and contentedness in your survival environment!

Once you’ve picked your survival site – a site that satisfies all the elements of survival, make an assessment of your priorities of work and you may begin building a shelter as your first priority (no injuries, water nearby…).  Initially, construct the easiest shelter.  Later, dictating your situation, you may construct a more elaborate shelter to suit your needs!

In the blog post, “23 Emergency Shelters That Can Save Your Life!”, you read about different emergency shelters.  Below are reasons to build a shelter.  Again, later in this section, I’ve listed a few things you might consider for your survival kit with respect to building shelters!

a) protection from the elements (cold, wind, sun, rain, snow…)

b) place to construct survival tools listed throughout this book.

c) gives a sense of security.

d) helps AVOID FEAR and PANIC!

e) may be identifiable by air or ground rescue.

f) place to store and safeguard food and water.

g) much more…

SHELTER also addresses the clothing, gloves, foot gear, head gear you’re wearing.  A small sewing kit could be added to the bigger Survival Kits in your backpack, vehicle and your home so to repair clothing, gloves, foot gear and head gear.

04)  FIRST-AID:  First of all, I feel EVERYONE should be familiar with basic first-aid.

a) Four life-saving steps (Clear the airway, Stop the bleeding, Treat the wound and Prevent shock

b) Heimlich Maneuver.

c) Treating fractures and broken limbs.

d) Psychological first-aid (Lie through your teeth).

e) Treating heat and cold casualties.

At the same time, a good healthy diet and the correct supplements will go a long way towards your survival if you find yourself in a survival situation.  A good survival kit could save your life.  Later in this section, I’ve listed a few items you might consider for your survival kit.

 05)  SIGNAL:  Is anybody out there?  Don’t count on getting help instantaneously once you find yourself in a survival situation.  Make an assessment of your situation and begin your priorities of work.  Depending on your situation, you may want to build a quick shelter from the cold rain, give yourself first-aid and sleep prior to contemplating building any signaling devices.  More on signaling later.  Later in this section, I’ll list some signaling devices for your survival kit.

06)  FOOD:  If there is one thing that will boost your morale in any situation – survival or not – it’s food!  You can go three weeks without food before you’re in serious trouble.  But food is all around you.  From the lowest part of the food-chain (plants), yes to even the human body if it comes to that!

In blog post – “300,000 Plants On Earth – Edibility Test”, I’ve listed the Steps in which to find plant life that is edible to YOU.  Each survivor must do their own Edibility Test.  The next step above the food-chain are insects and there are plenty of them all around you – like ants, worms,….

Later in this section, I’ve listed items you might want to have in your survival kit.

07)  WEAPONS:  The Right to Bear Arms (2nd Amendment)!  I hope you seriously consider this Right.  Not only to AVOID FEAR AND PANIC in a survival situation, but to protect yourself!  Why?  Now that you’re in a wilderness environment \ a survival environment, YOU ARE IN THE FOOD CHAIN!!!  Congratulations!!!

This Survival Expert Blog book will hopefully HELP YOU AVOID A SURVIVAL SITUATION and if you find yourself in a survival situation, HELP YOU SURVIVE IT!!!  Remember:  IMPROVISE, OVERCOME and ADAPT!!!

In blog post – “13 Weapons To Fight-Off Man Or Beast”, I’ve listed several weapons you can build to enhance your survivability.

Listed below are some good reasons to build, carry and use field-expedient weapons.  Later in this section, I’ve listed a few items you may want for your survival kits.

a) self-protection.

b) capturing small game.

c) neutralizing captured game.

d) psychologically it gives a sense of security and confidence.

f) helps AVOID FEAR AND PANIC (biggest enemies of SURVIVAL)!

g) used to build other survival tools.

h) much more…

08)  NAVIGATION:  I’ve said this once already and I’ll say it again:  The last thing you need to do is wander off in your survival area and get lost.  All that work you’ve done is for nothing.  Remember me telling you about the lack of water?

Lack of water DULLS THE MIND!  I’m telling it’s so true.  You must consider navigation as part of your survival kit.  Not only making a field-expedient compass but markers / beacons to help you find your way back to your survival site!  Why?  Because your mind will deteriorate while you’re out there (dehydration, hunger, depression, despair…).  You will forget stuff!  Your short-term memory will go to crap.

Listed below are some things you need to do right away once you find yourself in a survival situation.

a) Build a field-expedient direction Shadow-Tip Method as soon as possible as well as a bottle-top compass. The shadow-tip will be your “BIG Compass” and should be near your shelter – preferably next to your “BIG CLOCK”.  You can also build a compass – see Survival Sketch Map below.  Both should be clear of your regular foot traffic in and around your survival site.

b) Start drawing a sketch map of your survival site and immediate surroundings. Insure you record directions, distances, and descriptions.  Try to be as specific as possible.  Why?  Because you’re gonna be more forgetful as time goes on!  Here’s an example from the Anytime Anywhere Survival Program.

c) Make beacon markers throughout your survival area to guide you “home.” Make sure each beacon is different and is recorded on your sketch map with direction, distance and its unique description (branches, sticks, animal skull, etched markings in the ground…).

Listed below are items you might find useful in your own survival kit.

Can you think of more items for your survival kit?  Sure you can!  Just write them down and go out and get the items you may need Anytime Anywhere!  I like using items that have double, triple,… uses.

09)  Film Canister Survival Kit.  Here is my version of one of the smallest Survival Kits that you should carry on your person.  Just put it in your pocket.  This Survival Kit I call Film Canister Survival Kit.

You can get these film canisters for FREE!  Just go to any quick photo development shop and ask them for film canisters.  They’ll dig then out of the trash for you!  I’ve used hundreds of them when I teach my Survival Kit classes and they’re FREE!

The following are the items I put in my Film Canister Survival Kits that satisfy: FIRE, WATER SHELTER, FIRST-AID, SIGNAL, FOOD, WEAPONS, AND NAVIGATION!  As you can see, some items satisfy more than one essential item in a Survival Kit!  YES, it all fits!  The following items will fit in a film canister:

01)  09 large Strike Anywhere Matches (cut by 1/4 inch)

02)  Joey MatchGun (cut down version – IRISAP SR #54)

03)  02 cotton swabs

04)  04 medium rubber bands

05)  Small wad of fine steel wool-#0000

06)  Non-lubricated condom in its packet

07)  Dental floss (at least 12-feet)

08)  Saran wrap 06″ X 06″ (02)

09)  Petroleum Jelly (1/2 teaspoon) in saran wrap

10)  04 medium gold fish hooks

11)  02 staples

12)  05 medium metal paper clips

13)  05-06 wraps of carpet tape around canister

14)  02 striped straw (01-inch)

15)  .22 caliber bullet (01)

Next, I’ll cover the items that I picked to put into a Film Canister Survival Kit that satisfies the 8 Elements Of Survival (Fire, Water, Shelter, First-Aid, Signal, Food, Weapons and Navigation).

01)  Fire—09 large Strike Anywhere Matches, Joey MatchGun (SR #54), 02 cotton swabs, small wad of fine steel wool, 04 medium rubber bands, film canister, carpet tape (05-06 wraps around film canister), dental floss (12-feet), .22 caliber bullet.

02)  Water—Non-lubricated condom, film canister.

03)  Shelter—Dental floss (12-feet).

04)  First-Aid—Dental floss (12-feet), saran wrap, petroleum jelly, condom, carpet tape, Strike Anywhere Matches.

05)  Signal—09 large Strike Anywhere Matches, Joey Match Gun (SR #54), empty .22 caliber bullet.

06)  Food—02 medium fish hooks, film canister (bobber), dental floss (12-feet), .22 caliber bullet.

07)  Weapons—09 large Strike Anywhere Matches, Joey MatchGun (SR #54), 04 medium rubber bands, 04 paper clips (used with Y-Stick for sling shot ammunition), .22 caliber bullet.

08)  Navigation—02 staples, saran wrap, petroleum jelly, plastic bottle top, 04 medium rubber bands, film canister top.

Let me give some hints about my Film Canister Survival Kit.

Yes, all those items can fit in a film canister if you follow this advice!

The first item you should put in the film canister is the non-lubricated condom.  I use this to gather water because it easily allows you to gather a pint or so of water.  Yes, I’ve tried balloons, but it’s very difficult for the water from a stream to freely flow in any balloon – so a condom is best.

The Joey MatchGun (if you purchased Access Rights –  IRISAP Special Report #54) is a cut down version to fit in the canister.  It must be disassembled to fit.

The 09 large Strike Anywhere Matches must be cut down by about 1/4 of an inch to fit into the film canister.  I find that the large Strike Anywhere matches work better with the Joey MatchGun than the smaller Strike Anywhere matches.  I wrap them in the 06″ X 06″ piece of saran wrap and then secure it with the 12-foot piece of dental floss.  I like using dental floss because it’s more durable and weatherproof than string and you can use it for fishing, building shelters, flossing your teeth, a wick if you have oil…

The 04 rubber bands can be used to build a sling shot!  Just find a durable green forked stick, tie all the rubber bands together and attach them to both sides of the forked stick.

Your ammo will be your paper clips (you can also use them for your Chinese paper cup I talked about in the Anytime Anywhere Survival Program – see Survival Book at the end of this blog post.

Just straighten it out except for one end.  This will be hooked into the rubber band, just pull back, aim and fire.  It may not kill the small game (squirrel, rabbit…), it will stun it temporarily so you can capture it.

Bobby pins are also good ammo.  Bobby pins for ammo have a great velocity, so be careful where you’re aiming!  See Section 05 for more detailed information.

I put the 02 staples (for compass) and 002 fish hooks (gold – fish like shiny things) between the 02 cotton swabs (tinder) for your protection (avoid cuts).

Put all the remaining items in the film canister.  The bottle top MUST go last with the open-end down over the items in the canister.  Just push the top down on top of everything till it’s flush with the top of the film canister.  Finally, you can snap-on the top to the film canister.

Through my Research & Development, I’ve found that everything will keep for at least 04-years!  Almost 04-years except for the top of the film canister.  It may eventually crack after 02-03 years!  Other than that, your Film Canister Survival Kit will be there when you need it!  CARRY it on your person every single time you venture outdoors!  Keep a couple of Film Canister Survival Kits in your vehicle, tackle box, boat,…!

Yes, you can make your own, more elaborate Survival Kit with many more items!  Did you see my list on the previous pages?  You can make your own elaborate Survival Kits for your home, your car, your camping trailer, boat, airplane…  You’ll be ready Anytime Anywhere!  REMEMBER, true Survival Kits MUST SATISFY Fire, Water, Shelter, First-Aid, Signal, Food, Weapons, and Navigation!
