Switzerland’s Superior Healthcare System!
–
–
Here’s a quote:
“The Swiss have universal coverage, the healthiest population in the Western Hemisphere, and a government that spends a mere 2.7 percent of GDP on health care: about a third of what ours spends,” writes Forbes’s Avik Roy. “The Swiss system isn’t perfectly transposable onto the United States, but it is vastly superior.”
–
Switzerland has the best Healthcare System in the World:
- Swiss residents are required by law to purchase health insurance (Mandatory Health Insurance [MHI]). Cost is not more than 10% of their earnings.
- Nobody is denied coverage for pre-existing conditions.
- The government subsidizes MHI for people with low income.
- Patients have direct access to all levels of care — no referrals are necessary.

–
Swiss Vegetarians!
–
–
The Swiss population included almost 11% vegetarians and 3% vegans which comes to approximately 1,190,000 vegetarians and vegans. And the vegetarian movement is slowly growing. Only 02 countries in the world have more vegetarians than Switzerland – India and Mexico.
Older Swiss government data indicates that 2.3% of the Swiss population never eat meat and there’s a trend towards eating less meat.
A study by Eco Experts rated Switzerland as the #1 vegetarian country in Europe. The Eco Experts study focused on 26 countries and included the following criteria:
- Veggie friendly restaurants
- Annual meat consumption
- Price of meat per kilogram
Switzerland had the highest density of restaurants – 165 veggie friendly restaurant per 100,000 people of the 26 countries.
Switzerland also had the lowest consumption of meat of the 26 countries.
All across Europe, vegetarianism and veganism are growing in popularity. Even Portugal who came in ‘dead’ last in the 26 country Eco Experts study, Portugal is also showing a trend toward vegetarianism and veganism.
According to a 2019 Swissveg study, 31% of the Swiss population (2,600,000 Swiss) are reducing meat consumption or totally eliminating meat all together.
According to a Chef’s Pencil study, Switzerland ranks 5th on the ‘Most Vegan Countries in Europe.’ The Chef’s Pencil study, indicated 11% of the Swiss population is Vegetarian, 3% of the Swiss population is Vegan and 17% of the Swiss population is Flexitarian.
Note:
- Vegetarianism: A practice to abstain from eating meat and other animal products. What’s left? Fruits and vegetables.
–
- Vegan: A practice to abstain from eating meat and other animal products. What’s left? Fruits and vegetables. Also Vegans do not use any animal products like leather belts, fur coats, leather pants, leather jackets,…
–
- Flexitarian: Flexitarians are people who are primarily vegetarians, but on a rare occasion they eat meat (beef, pork, fish, fowl). And when they do eat meat, they’re very careful on how much meat they consume.
It is noted the reason most Swiss go vegetarian is because of their feelings toward animal welfare.
–
–
Bottom Line!
Bottom Line – the people of Switzerland are some of the most healthy and longest living people on Earth because of their growing Vegetarian, Vegan and Flexitarian lifestyles.
–
The elimination of saturated fats and salt in their diets is a reflection on their lower risks for:
- Heart Disease
- Cancers
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
which increases the country’s overall vibrant life and longevity?
In my humble opinion (author), with Vegetarianism, Veganism and Flexitarians growing in popularity in Switzerland and across Europe, in the near future, Europe will follow Japan with a high number of healthy & vibrant European Centenarians – people living beyond 100-years old.
