Here’s Mother Nature (most powerful force on Earth) and all She possesses at work. On 22 December 2022 (Thursday), a massive freezing winter storm hit the midwestern and eastern United States.

Below freezing temperatures reported in the single digits caused the usual cold weather problems and tragedies (wide areas to pocket locations):

  • Frostbite injuries (fingers, toes,…)
  • Hypothermia deaths (outdoors and indoors – latest toll 50 deaths)
  • Multitudes of pet deaths
  • Airline travel delays
  • Airline travel cancellations
  • Stranded airline passengers
  • Vehicle traffic delays
  • Multitudes of traffic accidents
  • Power outages
  • Blackouts
  • Dead vehicle batteries (vehicles inoperable)
  • Run on stores for food and other supplies
  • Run on gasoline stations – gasoline exhausted
  • Store closings
  • School closings
  • Multitudes of domestic and public waterpipe bursts
  • Multitudes of work call-offs
  • Multitudes of 911 calls
  • Crime increase (thefts, assaults,…)

Multitudes = Tens of Thousands or more

Note:  I got to give credit to Ameren Electric here in southern Illinois.  I sighted their utility trucks standing-by before the storm struck.  I actually expected power outages, but not one power outage, not even a short temporary outage.  I also sighted the salt trucks standing-by before the storm struck at approximately 1700 hours.

Pre-Christmas Storm Was No Surprise!

The pre-Christmas winter storm was no surprise to most people across the nation.  Forecasters reported the massive freezing storm was coming several days before it struck.  Yet, all these usual cold weather problems and tragedies still occurred.

Sure, millions of people across the United States wisely listened and prepared because of the multiple national and local weather forecasts across television and cable networks.  But hundreds of thousands of people were still victims to this massive pre-Christmas freezing storm.

And we still have the rest of December and January thru March of winter weather ahead of us.

Here’s My Solution To Reducing Cold Weather Problems And Tragedies!

Here’s my ‘Stupid Obvious’ solutions.  Let’s start with the Airlines.

Airline Industry: I believe the Airline Industry in the United States is the largest in the world and carries with it more problems when hit with major storms, especially during the winter months.

  • Airlines:  Airlines have ALWAYS had delays and cancellations during winter storms throughout the Unites States.  My answer is all the airlines should only fully book 70% of their airline fares between December to late February.  Instead of losing money, they simply increase the cost of their airfares.  It simply follows the rule of Supply & Demand.
  • Amtrak: Amtrak can pick-up the slack during December and late February.
  • Bus Travel: Bus travel can pick-up the slack during December and late February
  • Private Shuttles: Private short-range and long-range shuttles can pick-up the slack during December and late February

Self-Quarantine:  When a winter storm is predicted, immediately purchase supplies as needed for only those few days (DO NOT HOARD) and STAY HOME.  The entire family STAYS HOME and bring the pets indoors. And gather the elderly folks too.  This will help remedy:

  1. Frostbite injuries
  2. Hypothermia deaths
  3. Vehicle traffic delays
  4. Multitudes of traffic accidents
  5. Run on stores for food and other supplies
  6. Run on gasoline stations – gasoline exhausted
  7. Store closings
  8. Multitudes of domestic and public waterpipe bursts
  9. Multitudes of 911 calls

Power Outages and Blackouts: Power Outages and Blackouts cause cascading problems from A to Z. Every single person within the area without power is affected.

My best advice is to purchase a home generator with at least 02-weeks of fuel.  Home generator should be able to power-up central-air, lights, and refrigerator at a minimum.

Install solar panels on roof to generate electricity to home batteries

Small solar generators for smart phones and other small electric devices

Run On Stores For Food And Supplies: This is unstoppable. There will ALWAYS be a mass of people going for life-support items. And there is NEVER enough food, water and supplies. At times it may come to looting.

My best advice is to purchase food and supplies far in advance. In other words, you should have your own stockpile of food, water and supplies stored away and it should be kept as a secret within the family.

Multitudes Of Domestic Waterpipe Bursts: You can’t do a dang thing about public waterline bursts but you can help prevent your own home waterpipes from bursting in freezing temperatures.

  1. Keep all the water faucets barely trickling throughout the night or when temperatures are near freezing or below
  2. Keep all outdoor water faucets barely trickling throughout the night or when temperatures are near freezing or below
  3. Insulate all waterpipes if possible

Emergency Water: Water is an absolute must have item in your home.

In case home water is shut-off:

  1. Emergency supply of water should already be standing-by.  At least 10-gallons of water per person.  Emergency water should only be used for DRINKING and COOKING if necessary.
  • Collect cooking water, rainwater, and dirty water to flush toilets.
  • Use body wipes for physical hygiene
  • Use Emergency Water to wash & rinse clothes (collect all used water)
  • Use paper plates & cups for eating & drinking to AVOID washing dishes & cookware – wasting water
