Washington State is right behind Alaska when it comes to deep wilderness. I’ve talked to soldiers stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington and they all told me Washington State still has virgin territory.

In this day and age, that’s difficult to believe, but I believe it.

David James, 59 and 64 year old Marshall ‘Buster’ Cabe were hiking in the Oregon wilderness – Northern Cascades when they became lost on 23 August 2019 (Friday).

The 02 hikers ate blue huckleberries for energy and they also ate ants. Cabe stated that eating ants: “They aren’t bad. They taste like Sweet Tarts, except they’ll bite you in the tongue. You eat them fast.”

It is reported that the 02 hikers became disorientated and lost the trail they were using. In a camping fire accident, James lost one boot and his sleeping bag.

The men decided that Cabe was to go find help. Cabe gave James his raincoat and headed to find help. Cabe slept in hollow logs dressed-up with moss he gathered to keep warm.

Cabe very very wisely hydrated himself while trying to find help. Cabe stated: “Every time I saw a creek, I’d just fill my belly up with water. I’d lay there for a half hour… to let it get in my system and I go again. I didn’t get that hungry.”

But brave Cabe didn’t make it to safety. Five days later, on Wednesday – 28 August 2019, an SAR Team found James at his campsite and an hour later, they found Cabe. Both were transported to a hospital via helicopter. James was diagnosed with severe dehydration while Cabe was sent home to recover.
